This past weekend was Wolf's stag in San Sebastian, which has been almost a year in the planning to get everyone from everywhere over. On Thursday last week I finished up work at lunch time and got the train down to Gatwick, meeting up with Duncs on the way. Once at Gatwick, we grabbed some beers and food at Nando's, caught our flight out to Bilbao, got the bus to San Sebastian and finally met up with the crowd of jukkas already there. After dropping our bags in the apartment, we all headed into the old town for a pintxos pub crawl through the streets.
On the Friday morning after some breakfast pintxos, we all met up by the bike rental shop for a morning of mountain biking around Mount Ulia, a minor ridge located east of San Seb. It definitely took it out of all of us, but really was awesome to do and a good way to wake us all up after the previous night out :)
Once back from mountain biking, we all met up outside Giroki for a Carolina each for lunch and made our way over to the beach for the afternoon, soaking up some of that Spanish sun! After a good few hours on the beach and in the sea and some beach beers, we headed home to change and then all met up at Bataplan for a few cocktails there. Dinner that evening was booked in at Taberna Gaztelupe for steak which was an excellent choice, followed by beers in and around the Old Town afterwards.
Saturday was really misty and hazy which was weird, considering the rest of Europe was having an insane heatwave! So that morning, a good crowd of us decided to walk up Monte Urgull hill to the statue of Jesus at the top, overlooking the city. After a few hours of walking up and around the statue, we made our way down and grabbed some cider and pintxos for lunch.
That afternoon Woolley had organised the group event to be at the Jai Alai courts a bit out of town. Basque Pelota (or Jai Alai) is a sport involving a ball bounced off a walled space by accelerating it to high speeds with a hand-held device, known as a cesta. So after getting there by bus and having a beer outside, we gave Wolf his 'little red riding hood' costume for the afternoon, and then got given a demo and explanation of the sport with an hour or so to try play and use the the cesta "basket" to attempt to hurl the ball towards the wall, easier said than done! Was good to watch how uncoordinated we all were at using it, and then afterwards there were two games on by the pros which was pretty damn amazing to see them properly play!
From the Jai Alai, we headed over to the Petritegi Cider House for dinner, cider and a lot of jukkaness as could be expected! As always, the cider house night turned out rather messy but really good fun, until closing time when we all headed back to the Old Town and over to Arkaitzpe Disco Pub for a few more unnecessary hours :)
Yesterday morning started off with another breakfast of pintxos, and after checking out of the apartment, we walked over to the beach to soak up a bit more of the sun. Woolley and I decided to leave the others to it and grab ourselves a Carolina and a beer before making our way to the bus stop to get our bus to Biarritz and flight back to London, after a really good fun weekend with all the jukkas!
